About The Phyllis and Raanan Katz Sports Center
Throughout Miami and beyond, Phyllis and Raanan Katz are known for their devotion to philanthropy. They believe in giving back to the communities that they are so glad to be a part of. Mr. Katz takes pride in bringing people together through his real estate ventures. As David Reiser, owner of Mail Boxes Etc. and a UPS Store in two Mr. Katz’ strip malls would say,”He’s a diplomat…[who’s] brought in good, national tenants.”
Recognizing the effort of Mr. Katz, Former Mayor of Sunny Isles Beach Norman Edelcup named May 18 “Raanan Katz Day” in 2006, in honor of Mr. Katz economic contributions to the community, as well as his philanthropic ones.
Then in the years leading up to 2008, Phyllis and Raanan Katz made an extraordinary gift to the community. Knowing the value of having a space that can be utilized for athletics, but also for community events outside of the pastime, Phyllis and Raanan Katz put forward $525,000 to the construction of a gymnasium in the City of Sunny Isles Beach. In honor of their generous donation, the City named the building in honor of them on August 25th: The Phyllis and Raanan Katz Sports Center. Inside the facility is over 10,000 sq. ft. of space and a regulation-sized basketball court that can be easily converted into a volleyball/badminton court.
Beyond being a space where sports can take place, the facility is also home to a number of school, community and private events. In fact, in 2014 the Phyllis and Raanan Katz Sports Center hosted the City of Sunny Isles Beach Annual Holiday Ball. Here the gym space was converted into a winter wonderland full of trees, tinsel, projections of snowflakes, and intricate arrangements of drapes and lights. As one attendee said, “The ambience was so beautiful that you didn’t even know you were in a gym.”
About Raanan Katz
Raanan Katz is the founder and principal owner of RK Associates, a privately held, family-owned real estate development company which currently owns over 6,000,000 square feet of retail space and 100,000 square feet of office space. Since entering the real estate development arena in the 1970s, his “hands-on” approach and conservative borrowing practices have resulted in a portfolio of first-class properties with an extremely low debt structure, resulting in RK Associates being one of the more stable shopping center operators in the industry.
Raanan Katz began to switch from residential to commercial holdings in 1980, when he acquired three retail properties in the Greater Boston area. Then, in 1984, he purchased a block of stores on Miami Beach and continued to acquire properties throughout Southeast Florida and New England. RK Associates eventually became RK Centers. Today the company continually invests in maintenance and beautification of all its properties. His vision provides for the long-term viability of the company’s holdings, due to the constant attention to detail regarding even the smallest maintenance issues.
As the owner of RK Centers, Raanan Katz takes an active interest in the communities where his properties are located. Government officials in Hallandale, Florida, Middletown, Rhode Island and Stoughton, Massachusetts have formally recognized him for his development efforts. In celebration of his commitment to the development of the City of Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, the City has renamed 170st Street as “Raanan Katz Boulevard”, and dedicated its new athletic facility the Phyllis and Raanan Katz Sports Center.
Raanan Katz was the recipient of the 2004 Economic Development Impact Award, given by the Metro South Chamber of Commerce. In 2001, he was also recognized with a formal citation from the Rhode Island House of Representatives, acknowledging his community contributions through the development of a local retail and business center.
